The 30-second ask

You don't need a pitch. You need 30 seconds, one question, and the nerve to stop talking.

The first 10 seconds

Say three things. Who you are. How you know them. Whether they've got a second.

"Hey, I'm [your name]. I've been getting my hair cut here for a couple years. Got 30 seconds?"

If they say "not right now," ask when's better and leave. That's fine. You'll get a real answer later.

Don't open with "sorry to bother you." Don't open with the price.

In person

"I play for [your team] in Demo Rugby League. We're getting ready for the season, and I'm looking for a local business to put their logo on my jersey."
"It starts at $150 for the season. You'd also get your own page on the league site that shows your business first."
"Would you be up for it?"

Then stop talking. Let them think, even if it feels long.

Asking for the team or the league instead? Swap the jersey line.

  • Team. "I'm looking for a few local businesses to back our team."
  • League. "The league is looking for a few businesses to back every team."

The flyer hand-off

Whatever they say, hand them the flyer.

"Here's everything on one page. The QR code goes to my page, and every option is on there."
  • Yes? "Want to do it now? You can do the whole thing on your phone."
  • Maybe? "Can I check back with you Thursday?" Get a real day and put it in your tracker.
  • No? Go to Handling no. There's still a question left to ask.

On the phone

For people you know but can't easily visit, like a family friend's business.

"Hey there, it's [your name], [how they know you]. Got a minute?"
"I'm playing for [your team] this season, and I'm looking for a local business to sponsor my jersey. It starts at $150, and you'd get your own page on the league site. Can I text you my page so you can take a look?"

Send the link right after you hang up. Use the text template in the app.

Do this

  • Wear team gear if you have it.
  • Getting a haircut anyway? Ask at the end, not before.
  • Ask the person who decides.
  • One ask, one question, then quiet.
  • Log it in your tracker the same day.

Don't do this

  • Don't read off your phone.
  • Don't apologize for asking.
  • Don't promise numbers, customers or a tax write-off.
  • Don't argue with a no.
